How this exterior estimate works

Distance around the house times wall height gives gross wall area; doors and windows come off at 21 and 15 sq ft each. Rough siding, cedar shake and stucco hold far more paint than smooth board, so the stated coverage per gallon is reduced accordingly — lap siding by a tenth, rough by a quarter, stucco by a third. Trim is figured separately from linear feet at a half-foot face. Wind, spray loss and a porous first coat all push real usage higher, so buy the round number above it.
